The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Traffic Division of the Dehiwala Police Station has reportedly left his post and returned home, citing excessive work-related pressure.
According to reports, the Inspector of Police recorded a note in the police information book before leaving, stating that he was unable to bear the heavy workload and pressure associated with his duties.
Following the incident, Mount Lavinia Division Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashoka Gunasekara has instructed the Mount Lavinia Crimes Investigation Bureau to conduct an inquiry.
The SSP has reportedly noted that the officer’s decision to leave his post could set a negative precedent for other police officers.
As part of the inquiry, statements have been recorded from the Dehiwala Police Station OIC and the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) responsible for supervising the station, following consultation with the Police Legal Division.
