Former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ajith Rajapaksa has denied allegations that he misused government-provided fuel allocations during his tenure.

In a statement, Rajapaksa said false information had been circulated through social media and other electronic media platforms with the intention of damaging his reputation, without properly examining the procedures governing fuel usage.

He said he obtained fuel strictly within his legally entitled allocations and approved limits, and that he possesses official documents and records to support his position.

Rajapaksa expressed regret that the allegations had been reported without a proper investigation.

He also explained that no suitable official vehicle was available for him to carry out his duties as Deputy Speaker. Although he could have obtained a vehicle on a rental basis from an external party, he said this would have resulted in significant additional costs.

According to Rajapaksa, his decision was aimed at avoiding those rental expenses and saving public funds.

He emphasized that he performed his duties in accordance with the laws, regulations and established practices applicable to Speakers and Deputy Speakers, and maintained that he had not engaged in any illegal activity.

Rajapaksa further alleged that the actions against him were intended to divert public attention from corruption allegations involving individuals currently holding government positions who, he said, should instead be investigated.
