The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has launched a special transport service today to facilitate passengers returning to Colombo following the long weekend.
SLTB Chairman Sajeewa Kanakaratne said special buses are being deployed from several areas, including Matara, Galle, and Kandy, in response to the increased demand for public transportation.
He said all regional offices of the Transport Board have been informed of the special operating arrangements and instructed to take necessary measures to accommodate the surge in passenger numbers.
Meanwhile, the SLTB Chairman warned that strict legal action would be taken against bus drivers found operating vehicles under the influence of drugs.
The decision follows the identification of a significant number of bus drivers who had allegedly used drugs at the beginning of the long weekend.
In a related development, Railway Department Media Spokesperson Asanka Samarasinghe said an additional special train service has been introduced today between Anuradhapura and Matara to assist passengers returning after the long weekend.
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring passenger demand and adjust transport services as necessary to ease congestion during the return journey to Colombo.
