Two individuals, including Damith Fonseka, son of renowned Sri Lankan film actor Gamini Fonseka, have been arrested by Sigiriya Wildlife officials on suspicion of carrying out unauthorized activities on private land within the Sigiriya Sanctuary.
According to wildlife officials, the suspects are alleged to have dug a well and cut down trees on the property without obtaining the necessary permission from the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Officials also took several items into custody during the operation, including a bulldozer, a lorry, a tractor allegedly used to excavate the well, and a quantity of timber believed to have been obtained from the site.
The two suspects were subsequently released on bail in accordance with provisions under wildlife conservation laws.
They are scheduled to appear before the Dambulla Magistrate’s Court on August 31, where further legal proceedings are expected.
