Authorities are exploring alternative legal avenues to bring former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran back to Sri Lanka, as legal obstacles are currently hindering his extradition, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala has said.
Speaking to the media, the Minister said Mahendran is a Singaporean citizen residing in Singapore and has legally changed his name. He noted that Singaporean law contains provisions that can restrict the extradition or forcible return of its citizens to another country.
However, Wijepala said the authorities are examining possible alternative measures to secure Mahendran’s return to Sri Lanka.
He added that court proceedings related to the Central Bank bond controversy are continuing, with important information being revealed through the judicial process.
Meanwhile, investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have reportedly revealed that Mahendran legally changed his name to Harjan Alexander.
The name change is believed to have taken place around the time the CID began steps to obtain an Interpol Red Notice in connection with the former Central Bank Governor.
