Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga continued his stellar form by clinching first place in the men's javelin throw at the Zurich leg of the Diamond League series in Switzerland.
During the early hours of today (28), Tharanga produced a dominant performance, recording a massive throw of 92.07 meters. This marks only the second time in his professional career that the 23-year-old athlete has surpassed the 92-meter threshold. Earlier this year in June, he set a new national record and a world-leading mark by throwing 92.62 meters at the Rome Diamond League.
Currently ranked first in the world for men's javelin, Tharanga also recently captured the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games with an 89.75-meter effort.
The second place in Zurich went to Grenada's former world champion Anderson Peters, who threw 86.93 meters. Poland's Dawid Wegner claimed third place with a personal best of 85.16 meters, followed by Trinidad and Tobago's 2012 London Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott in fourth (83.02 meters) and Kenya's Julius Yego in fifth (81.66 meters). India's Neeraj Chopra did not participate in this leg of the tournament.
Tharanga has maintained exceptional consistency throughout the year, winning 11 out of the 12 competitions he has entered, including an active streak of six consecutive victories. His remarkable season features top podium finishes at Diamond League legs in Rome, Ostrava, Doha, and now Switzerland, further solidifying his status as a global powerhouse in the sport.
