Colombo Port has climbed six places in the global ranking of the world’s busiest ports, moving from 26th place last year to 20th place by the end of the first half of 2026, according to the latest Alphaliner Weekly Maritime Newsletter.
During the first six months of 2026, the five container terminals operating at the Port of Colombo collectively handled 4.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
This represents an 11.9% increase compared with the same period last year, highlighting the continued growth in container throughput at Sri Lanka’s main maritime gateway.
The significant improvement in Colombo Port’s global ranking reflects the port’s growing role as a major regional transshipment hub and its increasing capacity to handle rising container volumes.
The latest figures further strengthen Colombo’s position as one of South Asia’s key maritime and logistics hubs.
