Police have launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media showing an incident that allegedly took place inside the Ambalangoda Police Station. The investigation was initiated on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
According to the police, the inquiry is being conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Galle Division. It is being led by a senior police officer serving outside the Elpitiya Police Division, to which the Ambalangoda Police Station belongs.
The video shows a person behaving aggressively inside the police station while claiming that his father had been assaulted by police officers. The footage has since been widely circulated on social media.
Police said the elderly man identified as the father in the video had been arrested by officers from the Ambalangoda Police Station on the night of August 24 after he was allegedly found intoxicated and behaving disorderly on a road. He was subsequently taken to the police station.
According to police, the man had attempted to flee at the time of his arrest but fell while trying to escape. Police said the video appears to show signs of bleeding resulting from the fall.
However, police officers from the Ambalangoda Police Station took the man to Balapitiya Hospital on August 25. He was examined by a Judicial Medical Officer and was subsequently produced before the Additional Magistrate of Balapitiya.
The Additional Magistrate later ordered that the man be released on bail. The police investigation into the incident is continuing.
