Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to undertake an official two-day visit to Sri Lanka on September 9 and 10, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries. Indian media reports, citing sources from the Indian Ministry of Defence, reported the planned visit.
During the visit, Singh is expected to hold high-level discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuyacontha. He is also expected to meet senior military officials.
A key focus of the talks will be the implementation of the India-Sri Lanka Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation, signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025. The agreement covers areas including joint military exercises, capacity building, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, naval cooperation and opportunities in the defence industry.
The visit comes as India and Sri Lanka continue efforts to strengthen bilateral security and defence ties, with the two sides expected to review progress under the defence cooperation framework and discuss further areas of collaboration.
