The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has held discussions with relevant authorities on measures to prevent a recurrence of violence in prisons following recent unrest at facilities including Negombo and Mahara.

The meeting focused on inmate and officer safety, prison overcrowding, and inadequate sanitation and water facilities. Authorities said plans are underway to construct new prisons and relocate several facilities to more spacious locations.

The Prison Department also said legal and technological measures are being considered to expand alternatives to detention, including community service and house arrest, to help reduce overcrowding.
