Water levels at the Castlereigh and Maussakelle reservoirs in Sri Lanka’s central hill country are rising close to spill levels amid intermittent light rainfall in their catchment areas, according to officials.
A reservoir official said the continued light showers in the surrounding areas have caused water levels in both reservoirs to approach their respective spill levels.
At present, the water level at the Castlereigh Reservoir is reported to be just six inches below the spill level, while the Maussakelle Reservoir is approximately 3 feet 5 inches below its spill level.
In response to the rising water levels, authorities have taken steps to release water from both reservoirs to the relevant hydropower plants at maximum capacity for electricity generation.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation as further rainfall in the central hills could cause the reservoir levels to rise further.
