The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which was presented to Parliament by the government .

The petition was filed seeking the Supreme Court’s opinion on the constitutionality of the proposed amendment and concerns arising from its provisions.

The SJB said it had brought the matter before the Supreme Court to obtain a judicial determination regarding the constitutional validity of the proposed amendment and its potential implications.

The opposition party emphasized that any amendment to the Constitution must be carefully examined in terms of its possible impact on the country’s democratic structure, the separation of powers, and the fundamental rights of the people.

The petition comes as the government moves forward with the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment, with the Supreme Court now expected to consider the constitutional issues raised by the SJB.
