The Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau has obtained a 90-day detention order to detain and question Shiran Basik, who is alleged to be a large-scale drug trafficker.
Basik was arrested in Dubai in March and deported to Sri Lanka on August 14. Upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, he was taken into custody by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department’s Airport Unit.
During preliminary questioning, Basik reportedly told investigators that Dubai authorities had detained him after inspecting his mobile phone at a shopping complex and subsequently questioned him over alleged links to Iran.
Police said a previous Interpol Red Notice issued against Basik in connection with an earlier drug-related case had lapsed. Authorities were reportedly preparing to seek a fresh Red Notice when he was apprehended.
Following initial questioning by CID officers, Basik was handed over to the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau for further investigations.
The investigation is being conducted under the supervision of Senior DIG Ranmal Kodituwakku and Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa.
