A 12-year-old boy has died after falling from a high-rise residential complex in the Colombo 09 area.
According to preliminary police investigations, the child was a resident of the 14-storey apartment building and had been near the swimming pool area on an upper floor with several other children.
While looking out at the surrounding area, the child reportedly slipped or fell through an open section of the building and fell to the ground below.
The child sustained critical injuries in the fall and died following the incident.
Maradana Police are conducting further investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has also raised concerns over the safety of children in and around multi-storey residential buildings, particularly in areas with open sections, rooftop facilities and swimming pools.
Similar incidents involving children and high-rise or multi-storey structures have been reported in Sri Lanka this year.
In February 2026, a seven-year-old child died after a heavy section of cement plaster from the outer wall of an apartment complex in the Madampitiya area of Modara collapsed and struck him while he was playing outside.
The child was critically injured in the incident and was rushed to the Colombo National Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
In another incident in March 2026, a 15-year-old student was seriously injured after falling from a multi-storey building at a school. According to police reports, the student had lost his footing while attempting to climb through a window to reach a classroom on an upper floor.
