The Department of Meteorology has issued a No Tsunami Threat Bulletin following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake recorded in the Indian Ocean early this morning (15), confirming that there is currently no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka.
According to the Department, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 14 kilometres in the Flores Region of Indonesia, at coordinates 8.51°S latitude and 121.39°E longitude.
The Department stated that Sri Lanka’s coastal areas remain safe and that the bulletin was issued following consultations with relevant national and international agencies.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will issue further updates if necessary.
