Grama Niladhari Officers across the island have decided not to report for duty today (10) and tomorrow (11), citing the authorities’ failure to address several long-standing demands, including an increase in their travel allowance.
Chairman of the Grama Niladhari Trade Union Alliance, Nandana Ranasinghe, said the officers would take sick leave as part of the trade union action.
According to Ranasinghe, the travel allowance currently provided to Grama Niladhari Officers is Rs. 600 and has remained unchanged for the past eight years.
He stressed that the allowance was no longer adequate to cover the rising cost of travel and called on the authorities to take immediate steps to address the officers’ grievances.
The trade union alliance has warned that the failure to respond to their demands has left GN Officers with no option but to resort to trade union action.
