The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning regarding strong winds and rough seas in several offshore areas around Sri Lanka.
According to the warning, wind speeds in the sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to exceed 60 kmph at times, with the seas becoming very rough intermittently.
The Department has advised fishing and naval communities not to venture into these sea areas until further notice due to the hazardous conditions.
Meanwhile, wind speeds in the offshore sea areas extending from Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar, as well as from Galle to Matara, are expected to increase up to 50 kmph at times.
Fishing and maritime communities operating in these areas have been urged to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
The Meteorological Department also warned that temporary strong winds may occur during thundershowers, which could cause sea conditions to become very rough for short periods.
The fishing and maritime communities have been advised to remain alert to further weather warnings and updates issued by the Department of Meteorology.
