The Department of Meteorology has issued two weather warnings for strong winds and rough sea conditions, with both warnings remaining valid for the next 24 hours.
According to the Met Department, winds of around 40–50 kmph are expected at times in the North Central, North Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District, due to the prevailing active Southwest Monsoon conditions.
A separate warning has been issued for sea areas extending from Chilaw to Mannar via Kalpitiya, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Wind speeds in these offshore areas are expected to increase to 60–70 kmph at times, while sea conditions could become very rough.
The Department has advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.
Meanwhile, sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Mannar via Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai, and from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, may experience winds of 50–60 kmph at times, with rough sea conditions expected.
Fishermen and naval personnel operating in these areas have been urged to exercise caution and remain alert to changing weather and sea conditions.
