Police have arrested four suspects, including the alleged gunman, in connection with the shooting death of a man at a birthday party in the Kadirana area of Wattala.
The shooting took place on the night of July 23 at a party held at a reception hall in Palliyawatta, Kadirana. According to police, a group of individuals who arrived at the venue in a car opened fire at a person attending the party.
Following an investigation conducted by officers of the Western Province North Crime Division, with the assistance of Police Special Task Force personnel, the suspects were arrested yesterday (7).
Among those arrested are the alleged shooter, the driver of the vehicle used in the incident, and another individual who allegedly provided assistance and shelter to the suspects following the crime.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects are aged 26, 35 and 36 and are residents of Jinthupitiya, Matale and Kaduwela. Police said further investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police had previously reported that the shooting was allegedly carried out targeting an individual known as “Kudu Roshan” of Mattakkuliya, who is believed to be involved in drug trafficking. However, the intended target was reportedly missed, resulting in a nearby person being struck by gunfire and killed.
In connection with the same murder, police had earlier arrested four other individuals, including two women. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
