The active southwest monsoon is expected to strengthen from today, bringing intensified rainy and windy conditions to the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka over the next few days, according to the latest weather forecast.
The Department of Meteorology has warned of widespread showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail over these areas, with heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm likely in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Galle districts.
Meanwhile, isolated afternoon or evening showers or thundershowers may occur in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, and Monaragala.
Strong Winds Expected
Westerly to south-westerly winds are forecast to blow at speeds of 30–40 km/h, with stronger gusts expected in several parts of the country. Wind speeds of 40–50 km/h are likely at times across the North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North-western provinces.
Rough Seas and Marine Warning
Marine conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly over the coming days.
Sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil are forecast to become rough to very rough, with winds reaching 60–70 km/h at times. Authorities have advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into these waters until further notice due to hazardous sea conditions.
In addition, sea areas from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle will experience rough seas, with wind speeds increasing to 50–60 km/h. Fishermen and those engaged in marine activities are urged to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates closely.
Temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas can also be expected during thundershowers.
Public Advisory
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions against heavy rainfall, localized flooding, strong winds, and lightning. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert, secure outdoor property, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, and follow official weather advisories.
The adverse weather conditions are expected to persist over the next several days as the southwest monsoon remains active across the island.
