Train services on Sri Lanka's Northern Railway Line were disrupted after the night mail train travelling from Colombo Fort to Kankesanthurai derailed at Senarathgama Railway Station last night.
The Railway Department confirmed that several carriages of the train left the tracks, causing interruptions to rail operations along the Northern Line.
As a result of the incident, the night mail train operating from Kankesanthurai to Colombo Fort has been limited to Anuradhapura until further notice.
Railway officials stated that a relief train has been dispatched to the derailment site to assist with re-railing operations. Restoration work is expected to commence promptly, with efforts underway to resume normal train services as soon as possible.
The Railway Department has advised passengers travelling on the Northern Line to expect delays and service changes while recovery work continues. No information regarding injuries or the cause of the derailment has been released at this stage.
