The Department of Registrar General has officially launched a new digital system for issuing death certificates under the e-Population Register programme, marking a significant step towards modernizing Sri Lanka's civil registration services.
The new system was inaugurated on Thursday at the Department's auditorium in Battaramulla under the patronage of the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Prof. Chandana Abeyratne.
The event was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, P. Ruwan Senarath, along with senior government officials.
The newly introduced platform replaces the previously used handwritten death certificates with digitally generated certificates produced through a computer-based data system.
The initiative is expected to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and security of death registration while reducing administrative delays and minimizing the risk of errors associated with manual documentation.
The launch forms part of the government's broader e-Population Register programme, which aims to digitize civil registration services and enhance the delivery of public services through modern information technology.
Officials stated that the digital issuance of death certificates will streamline record management, strengthen data integrity, and provide citizens with a faster and more reliable service, supporting the country's ongoing digital transformation agenda.
