Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, has filed an intervening petition before the Court of Appeal seeking the dismissal of a petition filed by former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, who is challenging his arrest and detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

In his intervening petition, Cardinal Ranjith has requested permission to make submissions before the court regarding Sallay’s petition. He has also urged the Court of Appeal to reject the writ application, arguing that granting the relief sought could hinder the ongoing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks.

Sallay has challenged the legality of his arrest and detention under the PTA, seeking to have the detention order declared unlawful and set aside. The case forms part of the continuing legal proceedings related to the investigations into the coordinated Easter Sunday bombings of April 21, 2019.
