The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has commenced a special dengue prevention and control program across 11 districts from today (16) in response to the increasing number of infections reported across the country.

NDCU Director Dr. Kapila Kannangara said the programme is being implemented through 63 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) offices in the selected districts and will be carried out at the Grama Niladhari Division level over the next seven days.

As part of the initiative, mosquito control measures, including fumigation, will be conducted during the morning and evening to help reduce the spread of dengue.

According to the NDCU, Sri Lanka has recorded 71,235 dengue cases so far this year, while the death toll has increased to 49.

The Unit also noted that over 150 MOH divisions nationwide continue to be identified as high-risk dengue areas, highlighting the need for intensified prevention efforts.

Meanwhile, the Stop Dengue – National Dengue Eradication Program is being held for the second consecutive week, with activities focused on the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts.
