The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather forecast warning of rough sea conditions and strong winds in several coastal waters around Sri Lanka over the next 24 hours.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in the sea areas stretching from Negombo to Galle via Colombo.

South-westerly winds will prevail with speeds of 30–40 km/h across most sea areas. However, wind speeds may strengthen to 50–60 km/h at times in the waters extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Mannar to Chilaw via Puttalam. Winds in other surrounding sea areas may also increase to around 50 km/h at times.

The sea will be rough at times off the coasts from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Mannar to Chilaw via Puttalam. Elsewhere around the island, sea conditions are expected to be fairly rough.

Wave heights are forecast to rise to between 2.0 and 2.5 metres in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo.

The Meteorology Department has also warned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Fishermen, naval operators, and those engaged in maritime activities are advised to exercise extreme caution and stay updated with the latest weather advisories before venturing into the sea.
