The Ministry of Environment has launched preliminary measures to restore and protect traditional elephant corridors linking forest reserves and wildlife sanctuaries in the Mahakanadarawa, Nachchaduwa and Mahawilachchiya areas of the Anuradhapura District.
The Ministry said the Department of Wildlife Conservation, with the support of Members of Parliament representing the Anuradhapura District, will use GPS and satellite technology to identify the natural movement routes of wild elephants. These corridors are expected to be declared protected reserve areas through a Gazette notification.
In addition, steps are being taken to designate the elephant corridor connecting Mahakanadarawa and Nachchaduwa as a wildlife sanctuary.
According to the Ministry, the initiative is aimed at safeguarding the natural migration routes of wild elephants while providing a long-term, science-based solution to reducing human-elephant conflict.
