The government has officially declared the Old Bogambara premises as a prison through a Gazette notification issued by Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara.
The Gazette, issued under Section 2 of the Prisons Ordinance (Chapter 54), states that the Minister has exercised the powers vested in him under the Ordinance to designate the Old Bogambara premises as a prison.
Accordingly, the premises will be recognized and operated as a prison in accordance with the provisions of the Prisons Ordinance.
The designation was made under the legal authority granted to the Minister by Section 2 of the Prisons Ordinance, the Gazette notification said.
