Committee begins probe into deadly Negombo prison clash

A committee appointed to investigate the deadly clash at Negombo Prison is scheduled to hold its first meeting today at the Presidential Secretariat.

During the meeting, the committee is expected to discuss the unrest that took place at Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6, along with the circumstances that led to the incident.

The committee was appointed on July 7 by Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake with the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers. It has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident and submitting a report on its findings and recommendations.

The inquiry is chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Priyantha Fernando. The other members are retired Additional Solicitor General and President's Counsel Milinda Gunatilleke, and President's Counsel Mohan Weerakoon.

Senior Assistant Secretary to the President K.L.D. Asela has been appointed as the committee's Secretary and Convener. The committee's findings are expected to provide a detailed account of the events surrounding the deadly prison clash and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
