The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the deadly violence at Negombo Prison that claimed at least 27 lives and injured more than 100 people.

In a statement, the UN welcomed the Sri Lankan government's decision to appoint an independent committee to investigate the incident, emphasizing the importance of ensuring accountability and preventing similar tragedies in the future.

The organization said the incident underscores the urgent need for continued investment in Sri Lanka's prison system, particularly in addressing longstanding issues such as overcrowding and poor detention conditions.

The UN also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting prison reforms in Sri Lanka through technical cooperation, aimed at improving prison management and safeguarding the rights and well-being of inmates and staff.
