Dengue Cases Exceed 61,000 as High-Risk Zones Expand Across Sri Lanka

The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) says the total number of dengue infections reported in Sri Lanka this year has climbed to 61,060, following a continued rise in cases across the country.

According to the latest update, 2,604 new cases were reported during the past 24 hours.

The Western Province remains the worst-affected region, accounting for 32,054 cases, or 52.5 per cent of the national total. The Southern Province has recorded 9,674 cases, while the Sabaragamuwa Province has reported 5,237 infections.

The Central Province has confirmed 4,823 cases, followed by the Eastern Province with 2,979 cases, the North Western Province with 2,778, the Uva Province with 1,550, the North Central Province with 1,013, and the Northern Province with 957 cases.

Among districts, Colombo has reported the highest number of infections with 12,445 cases, followed closely by Gampaha with 12,282. Matara has recorded 4,428 cases, while Kalutara has reported 4,092, Kandy 3,802, Ratnapura 3,588, and Galle 3,501. The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) area alone has reported 2,557 infections.

Health authorities also reported 1,745 cases from Hambantota, 1,649 from Kegalle, 1,629 from Kurunegala, 1,220 from Batticaloa, and 1,149 from Puttalam. Other districts have reported lower numbers, with the fewest cases recorded in Vavuniya (94), Mannar (64), Kilinochchi (56) and Mullaitivu (35).

The NDCU said 142 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions have now been identified as high-risk dengue areas requiring intensified control measures.

The Unit further noted that June recorded the highest monthly caseload so far this year, with 21,546 dengue infections confirmed during the month.
