Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe says water tariffs are expected to remain unchanged during the second half of the year, citing the limited impact of operating costs on the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB).

The Minister stated that the Board had not experienced any significant increase in water purification costs during the first six months of the year, reducing the need for a tariff adjustment.

He noted that although electricity tariffs increased by 18%, the overall effect on water supply operations has been relatively minor. According to the Minister, electricity accounts for approximately 12% of the Board’s total operating costs, resulting in an estimated increase of only Rs. 2.50 per unit of water.

Dr. Ranasinghe also pointed out that recent fuel price increases have had little impact on water treatment expenses.

Water tariffs are generally reviewed every six months. However, no revision was made during the first half of this year, and the Minister indicated that a similar decision is likely for the period from July to December, as operational costs have remained largely stable.
