The Galewela Police initiated an investigation immediately after receiving a notification regarding the incident, which occurred on the night of June 28, 2026.
The deceased mother has been identified as a 45-year-old woman, while her missing daughter is 10 years old. Both victims were residents of the Thalakiriyagama area.
According to police investigations, the tragedy unfolded when the woman's son went to the Thubara Tank to catch fish. When his return home was delayed, the worried mother, accompanied by her young daughter, set out into the night to search for him. While searching near the area, they unfortunately fell into an excavated cultivation well situated near the Thubara Tank.
A search operation is currently underway to locate the missing 10-year-old girl. The Galewela Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
