The arrest follows a formal complaint lodged by the Inland Revenue Department with the Slave Island Police Station on June 5, 2026, regarding the ongoing fraudulent activities.
Acting on the complaint, a team of officers from the Slave Island Police Station conducted a targeted operation and apprehended the suspect on June 27, 2026, within the Galgamuwa police jurisdiction. The arrested suspect has been identified as a 50-year-old resident of the Galgamuwa area.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect used a specific modus operandi, contacting institutions that pay income tax via telephone while pretending to be a tax official. He would then request financial assistance under the guise of urgent personal needs, convincing victims to deposit money directly into his bank accounts.
Further investigations have uncovered that this is not an isolated incident; the suspect had previously been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a similar financial fraud offence. The Slave Island Police are conducting further legal proceedings.
