Sri Lanka earned a silver medal at the prestigious 2026 SCO Summer Chefs Competition, held in Qingdao, China, on June 26–27, showcasing the country's rich culinary heritage on the international stage.

The competition brought together talented chefs from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Sri Lanka, highlighting the diverse culinary traditions of member and partner countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Representing Sri Lanka were Head Chef Nishad Samaranayake and Assistant Chef Manoj Liyanage from Sinnara Restaurant, the only Sri Lankan restaurant in Beijing. The duo impressed the panel of leading Chinese chefs and international culinary experts by presenting authentic Sri Lankan dishes, including Kiribath (Milk Rice) and Pol Roti (Coconut Flatbread).

Their outstanding performance secured the silver medal, marking Sri Lanka's first victory at an international culinary competition in China in 15 years.

Speaking after the event, the winning team said the achievement provided a valuable opportunity to promote Sri Lankan cuisine, showcase the country's rich culinary heritage, and pave the way for greater international recognition of Sri Lankan gastronomy.

The success is being celebrated as another milestone in strengthening Sri Lanka's culinary presence on the global stage.
