Opposition Members of Parliament are preparing to table a motion of no confidence against Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne in the near future.

This decision was finalized during a meeting of the opposition parliamentary group held at the parliament complex, presided over by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. It is further understood that the responsibility of drafting the no-confidence motion has been assigned to a panel of opposition MPs who are legal professionals.

The decision to bring forth the motion stems from allegations that the Speaker has violated both the Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament. Specifically, opposition MPs accuse the Speaker of constitutional violations by failing to facilitate parliamentary support required to fill eight judicial vacancies within the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.

According to opposition members, despite bringing these matters to the attention of the House, the Speaker has consistently ignored their concerns. They further allege that the Speaker has gone as far as refusing to accept formal letters submitted by opposition MPs in accordance with parliamentary Standing Orders.
