A Senior Assistant Secretary attached to the Parliament and Cabinet Division of the Presidential Secretariat has been remanded until June 30 after being arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) over his alleged involvement in preparing a forged passport for an underworld figure.

The suspect was produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate's Court on Friday (27), which ordered that he be remanded. The arrest stems from an ongoing investigation into notorious organized crime suspect "Karandeniye Raju," who is currently being detained and questioned by the CCIB.

Investigators allege that the senior official facilitated the preparation of a forged passport under another person's identity to help "Karandeniye Raju" flee the country. The suspect is accused of creating the fraudulent travel document in 2023 while serving as the Deputy Controller of the Foreign Missions Division at the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

"Karandeniye Raju," the brother of underworld figure "Karandeniye Sudda," was recently deported from Dubai to Sri Lanka. During questioning, investigators uncovered details of how the forged passport had allegedly been arranged.

The 41-year-old suspect, a resident of Kandy, was arrested by the Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division of the CCIB for allegedly aiding an organized criminal gang member to evade authorities and escape overseas.
