At the election held at the United Nations Headquarters, Professor de Silva obtained 144 votes out of 185 valid votes cast, placing her at the top of the list of elected members.
With this victory, she also becomes the only Sri Lankan to be re-elected to the CEDAW Committee.
According to Sri Lanka's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the strong electoral result reflects the international community's confidence in Sri Lanka's commitment to promoting women's rights and advancing gender equality.
Among the other successful candidates, Egypt secured second place with 141 votes, followed by Uganda with 140 votes, Mongolia with 136 votes, and Canada with 135 votes.
The CEDAW Committee is composed of 23 independent experts from around the world who monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The committee plays a key role in promoting gender equality, protecting women's rights, and supporting the elimination of discrimination against women globally.
