A Senior Assistant Secretary attached to the Presidential Secretariat has been arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) over allegations of facilitating the preparation of a forged passport to help an organised criminal flee the country, police said.

The suspect, a 41-year-old resident of Kandy, currently serves as a Senior Assistant Secretary in the Parliament and Cabinet Division of the Presidential Secretariat.

According to police, the arrest was made on following an investigation by the Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division of the CCIB.

Investigators allege that the official prepared a fake passport in the name of another individual to enable a member of an organised criminal gang to leave Sri Lanka illegally.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the alleged offence took place while the suspect was serving as the Deputy Controller of the Foreign Missions Division at the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged passport forgery and identify any additional individuals who may have been involved.

Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the organised criminal or whether further arrests are expected. The suspect is expected to be produced before the relevant court following further investigations.
