The motion, submitted under Standing Order 83(1), has been signed by Opposition MPs and calls for a discussion on the continued failure to fill more than eight vacancies in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal for over six months.
According to the Opposition, the proposed debate will examine the impact of the vacancies on the administration of justice, the protection of fundamental rights, and the rule of law. The lawmakers have also urged the authorities to take prompt action to fill the vacant judicial positions.
The proposal is expected to be forwarded to Jagath Wickramaratne for approval to schedule the debate in Parliament.
