The Badulla High Court has postponed the sentencing of SJB MP Chaminda Wijesiri and another convicted individual until July 28 in connection with the assault of police officers during an incident in 2019.

The case stems from an altercation near the Bandarawela town roundabout after a police jeep reportedly overtook a vehicle convoy carrying the MP. Several police officers were allegedly assaulted during the confrontation.

The court had previously found Wijesiri, his driver Bandula Ratnayake, and former ministerial security officer Rasika Karunatilaka guilty of charges including obstructing public officials in the discharge of their duties, causing voluntary hurt, and issuing death threats to two individuals.

When the case was taken up for sentencing yesterday ( 25), the court was informed that the first accused, Bandula Ratnayake, had passed away. As a result, the court deferred sentencing for the remaining two convicted individuals until July 28.
