The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to introduce a new circular governing admissions to Grade 1 in government schools from 2027 onwards.

The proposal, submitted by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, aims to establish a more transparent and equitable admission process while ensuring equal access to education for all children.

Although Grade 1 admission guidelines are issued annually, the new circular seeks to introduce updated provisions and procedures designed to minimize irregularities and malpractice in the admission process.

The revised framework was developed after consulting key stakeholders, including the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), school principals, and senior education officials.

According to the government, the new guidelines have also been aligned with the country's forthcoming education reforms and are expected to provide a more transparent and accountable system for Grade 1 admissions in government schools.
