The railway line sustained severe damage between Ambewela and Nanu Oya at the 134-mile, 78-chain mark due to the cyclone. According to reports, the affected section collapsed to a depth of approximately 65 feet, with a width of 100 feet and a length of 120 feet.
Following the incident, the Department of Railways restricted Upcountry train operations, limiting services to the Badulla and Ambewela sections while repair work was carried out.
However, the Chairman of the Nuwara Eliya District Coordinating Committee stated that the damaged railway line has now been fully restored through the dedication and tireless efforts of officials and staff of the Department of Railways.
With the completion of the restoration work, normal passenger train services between Nanu Oya and Badulla will recommence from today, providing relief to commuters and travelers who rely on the scenic Upcountry railway route.
