Dr. Wijewickrama stated that the decision was taken in response to the increase in the value of the US dollar, which has affected the cost of importing medicines. He noted that the revision may lead to price increases for certain pharmaceutical products.
The gazette notification specifying the maximum retail prices for these 60 medicines was last updated in 2023. The NMRA is currently reviewing the pricing framework to reflect prevailing market conditions and currency fluctuations.
Meanwhile, the NMRA has intensified inspections and raids across pharmacies to ensure compliance with approved medicine prices. Dr. Wijewickrama emphasized that legal action will be taken against pharmacies found selling medicines above the regulated maximum retail prices.
The authority said these measures are aimed at maintaining transparency in the pharmaceutical sector while ensuring that consumers are protected from unjustified price increases.
