According to the department, southwesterly winds are expected to prevail with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 km/h.
Wind speeds in the sea areas stretching from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Kankesanthurai, Mannar, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota may increase at times to 50–60 km/h. As a result, these sea areas are expected to be rough periodically.
The Department of Meteorology has advised fishing and naval communities operating in these waters to exercise caution and remain vigilant regarding the prevailing weather conditions.
Meanwhile, other sea areas around the island are expected to be fairly rough at times. Wave heights in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota may rise to approximately 2.0 to 2.5 meters.
The department further noted that temporary strong gusty winds could occur during thundershowers, causing sea conditions to become very rough for short periods.
Authorities urge all maritime operators, fishermen, and seafarers to stay informed of weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety at sea.
