Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing an end to a distinguished 16-year career on the global stage.

According to sports media reports, Williamson made the decision while taking part in New Zealand’s three-match Test series against England.

The announcement marks the conclusion of an outstanding international career during which Williamson earned widespread respect and admiration across the cricketing world. He represented New Zealand in 378 international matches and established numerous batting records.

Since stepping away from New Zealand Cricket’s central contract system in 2024, Williamson has focused more on franchise and league cricket while remaining available for selected international fixtures.

In Test cricket, Williamson played 110 matches and scored 9,515 runs. He also amassed 7,256 runs in 175 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 2,575 runs in 93 Twenty20 Internationals, cementing his place as one of the greatest batters in New Zealand cricket history.

As captain, Williamson guided New Zealand to two ICC Cricket World Cup finals and three World Cup semi-finals. His most notable achievement came in 2021 when he led the team to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final, securing New Zealand’s first major ICC world title in Test cricket.
