The University Grants Commission (UGC) has commenced the payment of a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000 for university students with disabilities.

UGC Vice Chairman, Professor Wasantha Liyanage, stated that the decision to provide the allowance was implemented with effect from January this year to support students with disabilities pursuing higher education.

According to him, the payment process began this month, and eligible students will receive both the monthly allowance and the arrears accumulated since January.

The initiative is expected to provide financial assistance to students with disabilities and help improve their access to educational opportunities and support services throughout their university studies.

The UGC noted that the allowance forms part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and ensure equal access to higher education for all students.
