The inaugural event was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, who shared key insights into the future of football in Sri Lanka, infrastructure development, and the country’s growing tourism industry.
Addressing the gathering, the minister revealed that FIFA has agreed to support the construction of an international-standard football stadium in Sri Lanka. He stated that, following discussions held during the visit of FIFA’s Vice President to the country last year, the land at Kadolkale Stadium in Negombo has been identified for the project. The land belongs to the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, and preliminary legal procedures have already commenced.
According to the minister, the proposed stadium will create opportunities for Sri Lanka to host international football tournaments in the future while providing a major boost to tourism in and around Negombo.
Minister Herath emphasized that football, like cricket, has the potential to elevate Sri Lanka’s sports tourism industry to international standards. He noted that despite global challenges, Sri Lanka continues to attract large numbers of visitors due to its renowned hospitality and rich cultural heritage. As of May 31, tourist arrivals to the country had already exceeded one million, he added.
The minister also highlighted the historical significance of the Grand Oriental Hotel, which dates back to 1837. He described it as an internationally recognized heritage property and revealed that the Cabinet has approved plans to modernize the hotel while preserving its historic value.
Inviting football enthusiasts from Colombo and surrounding areas, Minister Herath encouraged the public to visit the FIFA World Cup Fan Zone to enjoy live match screenings, experience the heritage of the Grand Oriental Hotel, and take a break from their busy routines.
He concluded by expressing his appreciation to the management of the Grand Oriental Hotel and the York Street Live team for organizing the unique event.
