The Colombo High Court today dismissed an appeal filed by Ranasinghe Mudiyanselage Shirja Udayanthi, widely known as Shashi Weerawansa, seeking to overturn a two-year prison sentence and fine imposed by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court for obtaining an irregular diplomatic passport.

Delivering the judgment, Manjula Thilakaratne ruled that the verdict and sentence handed down by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court would remain in full force, rejecting the appeal filed by the accused.

Shashi Weerawansa was previously found guilty of obtaining a diplomatic passport through the submission of false information. On May 27, 2022, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court sentenced her to two years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000.

The court had also ordered that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six-month term of imprisonment.

With the High Court’s decision, the original conviction and sentence imposed by the Magistrate’s Court have been affirmed, bringing the appeal process in the case to a close at the High Court level.
