The public has been urged to exercise extreme caution regarding counterfeit currency notes and take necessary steps to avoid becoming victims of organized financial fraud, Police Media Spokesman Frederick Wootler said.

Speaking at a special media briefing held today (11) at the Government Information Department auditorium, he noted that several incidents involving the circulation of fake currency notes have been reported from different parts of the country in recent days.

Highlighting a major case, he said a 55-year-old woman was arrested in the Kotikawatta area by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau, and 6,300 counterfeit US$100 notes were found in her possession. The suspect has been remanded after being produced before court.

According to police, 251 counterfeit local currency notes and 6,924 counterfeit foreign currency notes have been seized so far in 2026, with legal action initiated in connection with the cases.

Authorities have advised the public to carefully check security features such as security threads, watermarks, and other identifying marks when accepting cash during banking and commercial transactions.

Police further urged anyone who suspects a currency note to be counterfeit not to recirculate it, but to immediately report the matter to the nearest police station.
