Red Warning Issued for Strong Winds, Rough Seas Islandwide

The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ warning for strong winds and rough sea conditions in the sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar.

According to the advisory, sea areas between Kankesanthurai and Kalpitiya are expected to be very rough at times, with strong wind gusts reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kmph.

The Meteorology Department further stated that sea areas stretching from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai via Mullaitivu, and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, are likely to experience rough conditions with wind gusts of up to 50 to 60 kmph.

The warning will remain valid until 10.30 AM tomorrow (11).

In addition, wave heights in sea areas from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota are expected to increase to between 2.0 and 2.5 metres.

Authorities have urged fishing and naval communities to avoid venturing into the affected sea areas until further notice due to the prevailing hazardous conditions.
